It is stressed that the following prices are a guide only, and in UK pounds. I can take no personal responsibility for their accuracy, although every effort has been made to ensure that they have been copied correctly. In addition it should be noted that the price of gold coins is very dependent on the bullion value of gold.
The information has generally been taken from the UK monthly magazine
Coin News,
and is reproduced by the kind permission of
Token Publishing Ltd, PO Box 14, Honiton, Devon EX14 9YP, UK
The headings F, VF, EF and Unc refer to the condition grades of the coins. A guide to
evaluating grades is found on my UK Coin Values Index page.
Proof coins relatively often found are listed, but the absence of a mention does not mean that
a proof of that year does not exist.

The following list applies to the standard St.George reverse Five Pound coins (with the exception of the special 1989 Sovereign commemorative).
Uncirculated coins can be distinguished from proofs by the presence of a U in a circle, usually to the left of the date. However, regular issue coins without the U were issued in 2000 (and possibly 2001)

The lack of a value for a grade means that the coin is rarely found in that grade.
The bullion value of a five pound coin was about £420 on 27th April 2007.
