The Association was set up in 1969 to cater for the sport of small-bore target rifle shooting in schools throughout the United Kingdom, regardless of whether the school has a Combined Cadet Force or not.

Each term there are inter-school Leagues, with four sections to cater for a range of challenges:
Teams are allocated to Divisions of 6 or 7 on the basis of declared averages, and targets are marked by an independent scorer. Each team receives points for for the number of teams beaten in each of five rounds.
No telescopic sights are permitted, but except for Section B any NSRA approved .22 rimfire target rifle and ammunition may be used.
