Die Numbers

Between 1863 and 1880 silver and gold coins issued by the Royal Mint for circulation in the UK and its possessions had a die number inscribed on them.

The following list of die numbers has been obtained from an article in the COIN 1974 Year Book by Michael Mapleton. The publishers seem to have gone out of business, so I can only acknowledge them as the source of this information, supplemented by information supplied directly to me by a number of contributors, including those listed below, to whom I am most grateful.

The list is almost certainly not exhaustive. Information on numbers not already listed would be most gratefully received, but should not be construed as adding any value to the new find - no premium in value is applied to particular die numbers.

Numbers reported well away from the general run should be viewed with a degree of scepticism. I am sure some of those said to be in the 80's are probably in the 30's.

Help and Advice

I would be grateful if you could search the site carefully before mailing me - the answers to the great majority of the questions that I am asked can be found on this site, and I am unlikely to reply quickly to such questions. In particular, I do NOT provide a valuation service.

If you have done this and still wish to ask for advice, feel free to mail me via my Advice page but please do not send me unsolicited scans or other binary files.
